Pediatric hearing assessments at dépistage auditif Audiologie Centre-Ouest are used to measure children’s healing abilities. Hearing loss can take place at any stage of life. However, loss of hearing abilities in the early stages of life, including infancy and childhood, can lead to several issues. It can disrupt the lingual development of the baby as the children require a working ear for learning the language and methods of communicating in their toddler years. Losing the ability to hear even temporarily can cause severe difficulties to the child in terms of understanding and speaking languages.

The hearing procedure occurs when sound waves come inside the ear and leads to vibration of the eardrum. The vibration further pushes the sound waves inside the ear, leading to the nerve cells’ triggering. These nurses are responsible for sending messages to the brain, which transform into the sound heard and understood by the person.

On the contrary, hearing loss occurs when there is a significant defect in one or multiple components of the ears. It can include issues in the nerves present in the year or malfunctioning brain parts responsible for controlling the hearing process.

Hearing loss can be distinguished into three kinds.

  • Conductive

This kind of hearing loss takes place when sounds are blocked from entering the ear. It is prevalent in toddlers and young kids. Causes like infection in the ear or the presence of fluid inside it result in conductive hearing loss. It is a mild form of hearing loss that takes place temporarily. It can be treated with medical assistance.

  1. Sensorineural

It is also referred to as deafness of the nerve. Defects in the structures of the ear or the nerve responsible for controlling the process of hearing result in such cases of hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss can range from mild cases to highly severe. Many patients have issues hearing some sounds, while some patients cannot hear any sound at all. This kind of hearing loss occurs from birth time, or it can also appear later in life.

  • Mixed hearing loss

A lot of patients suffer from conductive as well as sensorineural hearing loss. This type of case is referred to as mixed hearing loss.

Uses of pediatric hearing assessment

These assessments or tests are used to discover any issues regarding hearing loss in children. They also help in determining the severity of the loss. It is suggested to assess your child routinely as it helps in the timely deduction of any issues. Babies are tested for their reading abilities when they are born. However, if your newborn fails the test, it does not necessarily mean that they have a severe case of hearing loss. Make sure to get them tested again after three or four months.

Parents are encouraged to take their children for regular health assessments. These assessments include a check-up of the ear for excess wax, fluids, or infected areas. If your child is showing symptoms of hearing loss, it is suggested to get a regular check-up by a professional.
