Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is caused by an infection with a tick-borne virus (Nairovirus) from the Bunyaviridae family. The infection was initially identified in Crimea in 1944 and officially named Crimean hemorrhagic fever. Humans infected with CCHFV potentially develop asymptomatic, mild, severe, or even deadly symptoms. The course and result of the disease are determined by the specific features of the vector, the virus strain, and the host, as well as vector-pathogen-host interactions.
